10 reasons why Taormina is a perfect summer holiday destination

We were searching for a summer holiday destination to spend a week relaxing and enjoying the sunshine, but also somewhere with things to see and do – Taormina is the perfect combination!   We recommend staying near the town centre rather than down at the beach  – you can easily take the cable car or a bus down to the beaches for a day out.

Hotel: we stayed at the traditional Hotel Sirius, only about 5 minutes walk from the town centre and the Greek Theatre, just next to the cable car and the main bus station. It was a lovely hotel with a great pool.

Restaurants: we had so many great meals out but our favourites were Tiramisu and Villa Zuccaro, and of course all of the ice cream shops!

Top 10 things to do in Taormina

1. Visit the stunning Ancient Greek Theatre…

…and provides postcard perfect panoramic views of Mount Etna and the bay.

2. Book a day trip to Mount Etna…

…We stopped off at the Alcantara Gorges nature park on the way. Once we got half way up Mount Etna by coach – we then had to take a cable car, then what looked like moon buggies closer to the summit. It definitely felt like being on Mars, about 10 degrees colder than on the ground and huge hail stones! But it was a great experience to see the craters up close.

3. Take a short bus trip up the hill to Castelmola…

…which is a lovely little village with some great shops and restaurants and the remains of a castle providing some more fantastic views.

4. Take a walk along Taormina’s Corsa Umberto main street …

…with its beautiful piazzas and old buildings, quirky shops and an array of restaurants, bars and gelaterias to choose from! Our favourite was Capriccio.

5. Of course it is essential to take a trip to one of the beaches …

…and enjoy swimming in the Mediterranean. Heaven!

6. Take a walk around the beautiful Villa Comunale gardens …

…where you can find more great views over the bay and Mount Etna.

7. Enjoy the views of the Isola Bella…

…you can also take a boat trip out to see it.

8. Enjoy the Sicilian pizza, pasta, and gelato – food heaven!!

I was so looking forward to experiencing the food and Taormina didn’t disappoint.

9. Enjoy some Prosecco at an open air bar or restaurant in the evenings

10. Wake up early and enjoy the stunning sunrises

We loved Taormina too, but were not particularly impressed with the beaches or Castelmolo. We must try Etna next time.
